Finding Jesus this Christmas

It’s officially the Christmas season! One of my favorite times of year. Christmas trees, Christmas lights, Christmas cookies, and Christmas parties. A time full of hope, joy, and peace on earth! How can you not love all of that? And best of all, we celebrate Jesus. He is the reason for the season. That’s why at River of Life our mission is, “Helping people find and follow Jesus.”

What is Christmas really about?

Christmas really is all about finding Jesus. The world has been celebrating Christmas for almost 2,000 years and it all started because Jesus, the Son of God, was born by the virgin Mary, His mother, in the lowest of conditions… in a stable, in the city of Bethlehem, in the middle east part of the world. His birth is recorded history. Not too many historians would dispute the fact that Jesus was born.

That’s why Christmas is a great time to consider what it means to find Jesus. Finding Jesus is all about dealing with the questions of who Jesus was and what you should personally do in regards to Him. The Jesus of Christmas is not just the baby in the manger, He is also a great teacher, healer, prophet, performer of miracles, and (based on Easter) the Son of God. He’s our Savior!

Even Santa has roots in Jesus

While our culture may want us to view Christmas as a time to give presents, take the kids to see Santa Claus, or watch Christmas movie after Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel; Christmas has been and always will be about Jesus.

Even our modern-day Santa Claus has his roots in Jesus. Santa is based on the real historical person of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was born around A.D. 260 to very wealthy parents. He was an only child and his parents considered him a gift from God. After losing his parents to a plague as a young boy he inherited their wealth. He then used that wealth to help those in need and became an archbishop in the church in his 20s. The stories of Santa all come from the life of St. Nicholas, who gave his life to following Jesus. Why is Jesus important?

Jesus is the Christ. Christ comes to us from the original Greek meaning ‘redeemer.’ If you celebrate Christmas you are celebrating Jesus. There is no Christmas if we take out the Christ. Jesus is the reason for the season. It’s about finding Jesus. Have you found Him yet? Perhaps you’ve been avoiding Jesus all your life – maybe this Christmas is the time find Him. Or, maybe you found Jesus at some point, proclaimed Him as your Redeemer, your Savior; but you’ve lost your way and you aren’t following Jesus as He would call you to. If this is you, check out our “Follow” blog.

Will you find Jesus this Christmas? River of Life wants people to know the peace, joy, and fulfillment that comes from people finding and following Jesus. This Christmas take that step. If you know someone who needs to find Jesus, bring them to our Christmas services. Help them find Jesus. It will change all of our lives.
